AMALFI

Amalfi, noble and beautiful queen of the coast.

A perfect marriage between art and nature, between the ancient Moorish architecture, enchanted forests, hidden caves, and even a submerged crib.
Amalfi is the brightest among the gems in the treasure chest that is the beauty of the Amalfi Coast.

The Arabic and colourful facade of the cathedral, which overlooks the square from the top of the long staircase is undoubtedly the icon of the Amalfi coast. That, together with the spectacular Cloister of Paradise, with its pointed arches and slender columns which look like precious stone embroidery. The ancient Maritime Republic, which once encompassed within its territory all the surrounding municipalities, has no reason to be envious of its "colleagues" from Venice, Genoa or Pisa. Amalfi was responsible for the first nautical code for navigators of the Mediterranean Sea.

The oldest paper mills in Europe belong to Amalfi, who made, the precious ’Bambagina’ paper, once used for official acts of the most important courts and still produced today in small quantities for use by artists. Nature truly blessed Amalfi, selecting it as a privileged place to experiment with spectacular and imaginative games. The Emerald Cave is one of these, a karst cave in a long passed geological era, when water dripping from above shaped columns, creating a myriad of shapes and designs which make it look like a hidden temple in the rock. Over time, the cave has sunk, causing the impressive structures which emerge from the sea that we can see today. While the sun creates a luminous effect and enhances the incredible colour of the water. And that is not all; at the back of the cave you can see a submerged crib which a cortege of divers pay tribute to every year at Christmas. The inner part of the Amalfi coast is home to the nature reserve of ’Valle delle Ferriere’, the rocky ridges which protect the coast from cold northerly winds, and where the high humidity and low temperature ranges have created an extraordinary environment in which plant species of extreme interest survive, preserved since time immemorial.
