PRAIANO

Sunrise & Sunset.

In Praiano, between romantic sunsets, beautiful trails and artists’ residences.
Praiano is a town rich in history and art, however, it is mainly a place to take time out, to walk around, explore and wait for the sunset.

The town of Praiano is set in the rock which slopes down to the sea between Positano and ’Conca dei Marini’, and for centuries has been elected a favourite place for recreation, even back in the days of the Dukes of Amalfi. Its name comes from ’Pelagianum’, which means open sea. The sea, which has always been important for the people of Praiano, ever since the time of the coral makers, the hard work of generations of coral fishermen, fathers and sons, together with the women who intertwined hairnets while praying and singing. Its beaches, which are on the wild side, ’Marina di Praia’, enclosed between two walls of rock and ’Cala of Gavitella’, caressed by the sun until the evening and the most solitary cove ’Le Praie’, where rocks and vegetation stretch almost into the water. The history of this place, the only part of the coast which escapes mass tourism is important for the local people.
A deep religious faith emerges on every street corner in the beautiful shrines, painted plaster or more often on tiles, the same tiles which make up the precious floors of St. Luke’s and St. John’s churches.

The same ones which line the dome of the church of San Gennaro in the village of ’Vettica Maggiore’.

Yet Praiano doesn’t live in the past, rather it is strongly projected in the contemporary world. One example is the beautiful white house which hosts the Sol Lewitt foundation, established by the Praianese wife of the great American conceptual artist who died in 2007. The house contains several valuable works of the master. However, that's not all that makes Praiano unique in the world. To understand its beauty and its uniqueness it is necessary to liberate ourselves of all the hustle and bustle, take the extraordinary walks that immerse visitors in a timeless nature, along the beaches dotted with Saracen watchtowers, or along the paths in the rock, through spiritually highly charged places. One of the most fascinating is the Path of the Gods, which always overlooks the sea from the village of ’Nocelle’, and along which we can find the beautiful church of ’Santa Maria a Castro’. Here every year they remember the birth of St. Dominic with a party of thousands of torches which illuminate all the balconies and the church square, an extremely touching and evocative show.

The glimpses of beauty that this land offers to the visitor cannot be explained with words. And so the artist Sol Lewitt tried to explain what makes Praiano special, through a book of photographs which capture and immortalise the most magical aspect of this place: the colours of the sunrises and sunsets, the most romantic you can imagine. Because only here the sun floods the sea with golden light when the day begins and lights it up in red and orange before sinking beyond the horizon.
